What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and How Do You Get Cited by AI?
GEO, AEO and SEO work together. Learn how AI assistants pick sources, what to change on your pages and how to measure whether you are being cited.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand and pages the source that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity quote in their answers. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it: put a direct answer in the first 100 to 200 words, structure each section so it stands alone, add data and sources, and use schema markup.
SEO earns a position in a list of search results. Answer engine optimization (AEO) earns the short, direct answer that appears above or instead of the list. GEO goes one step further and aims to have AI-generated responses name your brand and cite your page as evidence. The three overlap heavily, and a page that does well on one usually helps the others.
Published analyses of large site samples point to a shift, though not a replacement. One review of 16,661 sites saw Google organic clicks fall about 15% year over year, while AI-referred sessions across 3,949 sites rose roughly 45%. Even so, Google still sends around 80 times more visits than AI assistants, so GEO is an addition to SEO, not a substitute.
The key detail is that engines select passages, not whole pages. A clear answer near the top of a section is more likely to be lifted than the same answer buried in paragraph nine.
Princeton-led research reported that adding statistics, citations and quotations can lift visibility in generative answers by as much as 40%.
Choose a fixed set of 30 to 50 questions your customers ask. Track, by engine and country, how often your brand is mentioned, how often your page is cited and your share of voice against competitors. Compare that with AI-referred sessions in your analytics alongside organic traffic.
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1–30 | Measure your baseline across engines and questions. |
| 31–60 | Fix priority pages: answer-first openings, tables, schema, author bios. |
| 61–90 | Earn third-party mentions: industry publications, partner pages, communities. |

No. Google still sends far more traffic than AI assistants. GEO adds answer-first structure, evidence and schema on top of solid SEO.
Answer engine optimization focuses on earning the direct answer to a question, such as featured snippets and AI summaries.
Page fixes can be picked up within weeks, but earning third-party mentions that engines trust usually takes a few months.
