AI-Ready Data: Why 60% of AI Projects Without It Get Abandoned
Gartner expects most AI projects without AI-ready data to be abandoned through 2026. Here is what AI-ready means and a five-step way to get there.
Gartner expects most AI projects without AI-ready data to be abandoned through 2026. Here is what AI-ready means and a five-step way to get there.

AI-ready data is data that is complete, consistent, governed and documented for the specific use case a model will serve. Gartner predicts that through 2026, 60% of AI projects not supported by AI-ready data will be abandoned, and its survey found 63% of organisations lack, or are unsure they have, the right data management practices.
AI-ready does not mean perfect. It means the data reflects the patterns, errors and edge cases a particular model must handle, that its origin and meaning are documented, and that it can be refreshed reliably. Readiness is therefore judged per use case, not once for the whole company.

Gartner’s own summary is blunt: if the data has issues, the data is not ready for AI. A strong model on weak data simply learns the weaknesses faster.
Each issue looks minor in isolation. Together they produce a system that looks accurate in testing and disappoints in production, which is when teams lose trust in AI.
Gartner recommends extending existing data management rather than replacing it. We turn that advice into five practical steps:
Choose one decision that matters, for example which leads to call first. Clean only the data that decision needs, train a modest model, and compare it with how the work is done today. The measured lift becomes the business case for the next project.
A model can only be as honest as the data it learns from.
Data that is accurate, consistent, governed and documented for a specific AI use case, with reliable pipelines to keep it fresh.
Poor-quality or poorly understood data teaches models the wrong patterns, so results look fine in testing and fail in real use. Gartner predicts 60% of projects without AI-ready data will be abandoned through 2026.
Map it to one use case, test for duplicates, gaps and inconsistent definitions, confirm ownership and metadata, and measure how a simple model performs against your current process.
Usually not. Gartner advises extending existing data management with AI-specific capabilities such as vector stores, chunking and retrieval.
